This course is recommended for new and improving clerks, assistant clerks and administrative staff.


Clerks are responsible for producing professional agendas and minutes, but this is a skill that has to be learnt. There is lots of legislation that relates to agendas and minutes, it is important that things are done correctly to ensure that decisions can't be challenged. A Clerk has a crucial role in a meeting, but this role is often undervalued and misunderstood.


Course content

The legislation relating to the issuing of the summons and the collation of the agenda

What minutes must contain and what should not be included

Hints and tips for producing concise and professional looking minutes

The public's role and rights in meetings

Sharing documents with councillors and the public

The Clerk's role in a meeting

Correcting and approving minutes


By the end of this course, you will

Be able to produce professional agendas and minutes

Understand the requirements of publicising meetings and their decisions

Be confident with handling confidential items 

Understand the importance of producing documents that comply with Website Accessibility requirements

Understand how different types of meeting differ

Understand your role in a meeting as part of the decision-making process


The tutor is an experienced Clerk with many years of producing agendas and minutes and attending meetings.
